Education
M.A. TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) B.A. English Teaching Credential I have worked at college, high school, and middle school levels. Currently I am teaching high school English and ESL and working toward becoming a full time professor. I have been doing private tutoring for 7 years. It started as a way to pay my bills while in school, and became a lifelong passion for education. I have a BA in English, Masters in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), and a teaching credential. My students most frequently say that I am caring, funny, and try my very best to make sure that they understand and succeed. My parents would say that I am on time and dedicated. A tutor can be just a helper, or can be a very special relationship to a family. Over the years I have had many clients. Some pass through for a month or two, but I have had many that I have stayed with for years. I have had clients as long as four years if the relationship suites us both. I have tutored clients from 5 to graduate school. I tutor anything from reading to science to math, depending on the level. I feel that I have a unique connection with students both because of the wide array of students that I have worked with, but also because I struggled as a student myself. Someone who has excelled in academics may not be able to understand the pain and anxiety school, and especially English class, may cause students. Students can struggle for a variety of reasons, and it is important as a teacher that I was not successful in all of my classes. There were a tough couple years of high school where I almost gave up. I know what it is like to have ambitious parents who are biting their nails until they see the next progress report. I have professed my loathing for mathematics, but through the help of my teachers and tutor learned that I am capable of it. By winning this struggle I felt success despite the lack of innate magic math powers. Only when I decided to push myself to get help did I succeed.
Experience
7 years experience tutoring specializing in disabilities ages 5-grad school 3 years as community college professor 4 years experience teaching high school I got my start as an in-home tutor for children with autism. This experience has made me very patient, and I am able to adapt my expectations to fit my students. Each success or struggle is an individual experience. As a tutor it is my job to know what constitutes a success or failure for each specific student. For example what is a great piece of writing for one student may show little effort by another student. Each student is unique, and it is my job as an academic supporter to know their strengths and weaknesses thoroughly. I have been working on these skills further in class room settings. In the last three years I have taught middle school, high school, and college level courses. Since the beginning I have been an in-home tutor, but I am flexible to whatever location a student needs tutoring be it in home, a local library, or a nearby Starbucks. I only tutor privately now since I am already busy at a full time position. Tutoring privately also gives me the privilege of fewer bosses. I only need to please and follow the rules of the tutoring client and their family. My philosophy is to make the tutoring fun and exciting for both the student and the teacher! I have had a huge spread of students. I have worked pretty extensively with students with autism and ESL students. I am ABA trained and I have taken this base to be a large part of my personal philosophy. ABA is based on ideas like errorless learning and close supervision of the student. ABA requires the tutor to be incredibly in-tune with the needs and skills of the client. ABA attempts to only use positive motivation and encouragement to get the best results from their students. I have worked with students from age 5-through adults. I have even tutored a Master's student with dyslexia in an online program and a businessman in improving his English. I have experience with elementary school students and high school students through years of tutoring. I tutor all subjects, but my specialty is English. I have tutored a few students for test preparation such as English placement exams, SAT, and GRE.
